“Lauryn, baby use your head”
But instead I chose to use my heart
Now the joy of my world is in Zion
[My favorite memory attached to this song is of my mom zinging Lauryn Hill. At the end of this song LH sings, "My joy" over and over. One time my mom said, "What's she saying? Bok choy, bok choy? Is she making stir fry or something?" Awesome.]

1. Forgiveness — The Patty Griffin (because some people require the definite article and some songs require full disclosure)
We are swimming with the snakes
At the bottom of the well
So silent and peaceful in the darkness where we fell
But we are not snakes
And what’s more, we never will be
And if we stay swimming here forever
We will never be free
I heard them ringing the bells
In heaven and hell
They got a secret
They’re getting ready to tell
It’s falling from the skies
It’s calling from the gravesOpen your eyes, boy, I think we are saved
Open your eyes, boy, I think we are saved
Let’s take a walk on the bridge
Right over this mess
Don’t need to tell me a thing, baby
Well I already confessed
And I’ve raised my voice to the air
And we were blessedIt’s hard to give, it’s hard to get
But everybody needs a little forgivenessWe are calling for help tonight on a thing phone line
As usual we’re having ourselves one hell of a time
And the planes keep flying right over our heads
No matter how loud we shout, “Hey, hey, hey !”
And we keep waving and waving our arms in the air
But we’re all tired out
I heard somebody say
“Today’s the day
A big old hurricaine
She’s blowing your way
Knocking over the buildings
Killing all the lights”Open your eyes, boy, we made it through the night
Open your eyes, boy, we made it through the night
Let’s take a walk on the bridge
Right over this mess
Don’t need to tell me a thing, baby
Well I already confessed
And I’ve raised my voice to the air
And we were blessedIt’s hard to give, it’s hard to get
It’s hard to live, baby, but still I think it’s the best bet
Hard to give
We’re never gonna forget
That everybody needs a little forgiveness

Just quiet, I am dreaming over you.
5. Flake — Jack Johnson
I know she loves the sunrise
No longer sees it with her sleepy eyes
Snagged this from a random blog:
Why don’t more people watch 30 Rock? I have a feeling we’re finding out slowly but surely that people are getting too stupid to GET comedy.Yes, I really believe that. But, now that people will have more time because they are either …
- Unemployed
- Underemployed, or
- Too Broke to Do Stuff
… they will return to things like reading and thinking and they will learn once again how to follow a joke and find the funny.
At least that’s my wish for them.
Although I hesitate to make the grand generalization of stupidity regarding the American public, it is true that the really smart shows always get canceled. We should really stop saying “Arts and Entertainment” and start talking about “Art OR Entertainment”. Today’s television is usually one or the other, not both. And Art always gets the shaft.
[lest one think, based on this post, that 30Rock has been canceled, it has not]
[I never do anything daily that I say I will, therefore "the dailys" are now "the 300s"]
I had a list of things to do today. A plan was mapped out, bus routes and timing were down. Everything was ready. I woke up at 5:30 and went to the gym. It was beautiful. Nobody was in the weight room, so I wasn’t in the minority gender, nor were there any creepy-creepoes watching me workout. I came home to an awful noise coming from the construction being done in the apartment above ours, AT 7:30 AM! Who does construction on a residential building at that hour? The demolition and reconstruction has been going on for about two weeks now and it has been audibly painful.
After making coffee, I headed out the door to get more visa pages for my passport. There are apparently two places called US Consulate, I went to the closer one, and so, of course, the wrong one. I had no time to go to the right one AND get to my appointment with the man who fixes my back. So, I started walking towards a tea house that the guy who fixes my back recommended to sit a spell and read. When I got there, the place was closed, so I sat on a bench and read. I then realized, around 9:30, that I hadn’t eaten anything since I woke up. So, I made my way towards Mr. Fix Your Back, deciding that I would stop at a cafe on the way and get a pastry. I noted the post office that I should come back to in order mail rent checks home. After a chocolate croissant and an espresso, I headed to my appointment, where I was asked if I was sure that I had an appointment. Apparently, it didn’t get made, so I am going back at 1:00 pm. I headed back to the bus stop, stopping at the post office on the way. This was a post office which was closed for renovations and where I could not get stamps.
Visa Pages = Fail
Tea House = Fail
Back Fixed = Fail
Checks Mailed = Fail
All before noon.
I did find 50 skekels in the street, whose owner could not be located. The owner is now me. Bonus!
